RANE TWELVE MKII Review, Guide & Full Specifications

The RANE TWELVE MKII is a 12-inch motorised turntable controller designed to give digital DJs the physical feel of a traditional deck without using a tonearm or stylus. It can control software through USB MIDI, output DVS control tone through RCA, or combine the two in a hybrid workflow.

It is not a conventional audio turntable. Instead, the TWELVE MKII is a dedicated control deck for software-based DJ systems, aimed particularly at scratch and battle DJs who want full-size moving-platter control with digital reliability.

12-inch motorised platter

The full-size 12-inch platter is the main reason to choose the TWELVE MKII. It is designed to reproduce the physical response of a turntable more closely than a conventional controller jog wheel, making cueing, backspins and scratching feel familiar to DJs with vinyl experience.

A high/low torque setting lets the platter response be changed between a stronger modern-turntable feel and a lighter classic-style response.

USB MIDI mode

In USB MIDI mode, the TWELVE MKII connects to the computer directly, through a powered USB hub or through a compatible mixer with an integrated USB hub. Deck-select buttons can assign the unit to the available software deck.

With Serato, this mode lets the controller send platter, pitch, navigation and performance information directly to the software without using a DVS audio signal.

DVS mode

The MKII adds an RCA control-tone output for DVS operation. When connected to a compatible DVS mixer or controller, the unit can send Serato control tone just as control vinyl would, but without a physical cartridge or stylus.

The RCA connection is therefore a control signal rather than a conventional programme-audio output from the music itself.

Hybrid DVS and MIDI mode

USB and RCA can be used together. In this hybrid setup, DVS handles platter control while USB MIDI remains available for functions such as hot cues, needle search and library navigation.

This is useful for DJs who like a traditional DVS signal path but still want the convenience of modern hardware controls.

Deck selection and multi-deck setups

Deck 1–4 buttons allow the controller to be assigned to different software decks when the connected mixer supports enough channels. In a two-channel mixer setup, only the first two decks will normally be available.

Pitch control and battle-style layout

The long pitch fader sits at the top of the deck, reflecting the battle-style turntable orientation where the pitch control is kept away from the platter hand. Multiple pitch ranges allow both fine tempo adjustment and much larger creative speed changes.

Software compatibility

RANE lists the TWELVE MKII for use with Serato DJ Pro, Traktor and VirtualDJ. With Serato, it functions as an accessory and therefore needs a compatible Serato-enabled mixer or controller rather than unlocking Serato DJ Pro by itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can the TWELVE MKII play ordinary vinyl records?

No. It is a digital control deck rather than a conventional audio turntable with a tonearm and cartridge.

Does it work with Serato DVS?

Yes. The MKII can output Serato control tone through its RCA connection to a compatible DVS mixer or controller.

Can it work over USB only?

Yes. USB MIDI is one of the supported operating modes.

Overall view

The TWELVE MKII is deliberately specialised. It does not try to replace a mixer or become an all-in-one controller; its purpose is to provide full-size moving-platter control for a digital DJ system.

For scratch and battle DJs who want turntable-style feel without relying on cartridges and control vinyl, its combination of motorised control, DVS and MIDI remains distinctive.
